Good handwashing habits depend on access to the essentials: water, soap and suitable hand-drying facilities.
Held every year on 15 October, Global Handwashing Day raises awareness of handwashing with soap. For facilities managers, cleaning contractors and distributors, it is also an opportunity to review the everyday arrangements that keep commercial washrooms ready to use.
At FourFront, we see dispenser selection, replenishment and maintenance as practical parts of that work.
Why handwashing matters
Washing hands with soap and water helps remove dirt and germs and reduce their spread to other people and surfaces.
The NHS recommends washing hands for around 20 seconds, covering all areas, rinsing and drying thoroughly. Important occasions include after using the toilet, before eating or handling food, and after coughing, sneezing or blowing your nose.
Equipment supports access to handwashing; effective technique and regular use remain essential.

Four checks for your commercial washroom
1. Is soap available throughout the day?
A dispenser can only serve its purpose when it contains a suitable product.
Review soap levels during cleaning rounds and consider when facilities are busiest. Offices, schools and hospitality venues may have different usage patterns, so replenishment schedules should reflect the individual site.
Viewing windows can help staff check levels, alongside regular physical inspections.
2. Does the pump suit the formulation?
Liquid soap and foam soap require appropriate pump configurations. Matching the pump to the intended formulation is an important part of specifying and maintaining a dispenser.
Before changing products, check compatibility. Follow the dispenser and soap manufacturer’s cleaning and refilling instructions.
Our team can help you discuss pump options for your intended formulation.
3. Is the dispenser working correctly?
Routine checks should include operating the dispenser and looking for leaks, damage or difficulty dispensing.
If a unit needs attention, identify the model and the affected component before deciding what to replace. Where suitable spare parts are available, replacing a worn component may extend the dispenser’s working life.
FourFront’s “Repair Over Replace” approach focuses on helping customers maintain suitable equipment through replacement-part support and practical guidance.
4. Are hand-drying facilities ready to use?
Include hand drying in the same inspection routine.
Check paper towel supplies and dispenser operation where fitted, or check that hand dryers are functioning. Keep the surrounding area clean and report faults promptly.
Support the people keeping facilities ready
Cleaning and maintenance teams turn specifications into working facilities every day.
Clear responsibilities, accessible supplies and a straightforward way to report faults help them keep washrooms ready for staff, customers and visitors.
This Global Handwashing Day, take a few minutes to check the facilities—and recognise the people looking after them.
